On November 2, 1920, a white mob massacred Black residents in Ocoee after an African American man attempted to cast his vote in an election. Estimates of the death toll vary, with some placing it as high as 80, while locals later believed it was about 30 or 35. The event was a direct act of racial violence to suppress Black voting rights in the South.
