On March 7, 1965, six hundred Alabama civil rights activists staging a Selma-to-Montgomery protest march were viciously attacked by Alabama State Troopers. The marchers were beaten and驱赶 to draw attention to the denial of black voting rights in the state. The national response to this televised violence contributed directly to the passing of the Voting Rights Act later that year.
