On November 10, 1898, a white supremacist mob of approximately 2,000 men overthrew the legally elected mixed-race Fusionist government in Wilmington, North Carolina, marking the only successful coup d'état in U.S. history[1][2]. The violence included the destruction of the city's only Black newspaper, *The Daily Record*, and the massacre of Black residents, with death toll estimates ranging from at least 14 to between 60 and 300 people[1][2][7]. The event resulted in the forced resignation of over 100 Black and white elected officials, the banishment of thousands of Black citizens, and accelerated the enactment of Jim Crow laws and voter disenfranchisement across the South[2][7][8].
