On April 13, 1873, a white mob attacked Black Republicans in Colfax, Louisiana, during a dispute over local election results. At least 60 to 150 Black men were killed, many after being taken prisoner, marking one of the deadliest episodes of Reconstruction violence. The massacre effectively ended Republican control in the region and signaled the collapse of federal protection for Black voters.
