On November 2, 1920, a white mob reacted violently to news that an African American man had tried to cast his vote in an election, massacring Black residents in Ocoee, central Florida. Estimates of how many African Americans were killed vary, but the event represents one of the most severe incidents of racial violence targeting Black voters in the post-Reconstruction South. The massacre was part of broader efforts to suppress Black voting rights through violence.
