White posses and federal troops killed hundreds of Black sharecroppers in rural Arkansas who were organizing a farmers' union to demand fair payment for cotton. Estimates of Black deaths range from 24 to over 200, while only five white men died. The event was used to justify further disenfranchisement and terror against Black political organization in the South.
