In late September 1919, white mobs and federal troops attacked Black sharecroppers in Elaine, Arkansas, who were attempting to form a union to demand fairer payments. The massacre resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Black Americans, with official reports citing far fewer casualties than historical estimates suggest.
