White mobs and federal troops killed at least 100 Black farmers who were attempting to organize a union to fight for fair compensation for their cotton. The violence occurred after a confrontation between Black farmers and white deputies, leading to a massacre that left hundreds dead in the worst racial violence of the Red Summer[8].
