Beginning on August 11, 1965, the Watts Riots were a series of violent confrontations between Los Angeles police and residents of predominantly African American neighborhoods in South-Central Los Angeles. The riots lasted six days, resulting in 34 deaths, more than 1,000 injuries, and over $40 million in property damage. The uprising erupted after the arrest of 21-year-old Marquette Frye, a Black motorist, by a white highway patrolman.
