Beginning on August 11, 1965, and lasting six days, the Watts riots were violent confrontations between Los Angeles police and residents of predominantly African American neighborhoods. The riots resulted in 34 deaths, over 1,000 injuries, and more than $40 million in property damage. The event is a major catalyst for the militant Black Power movement.
