On April 13, 1873, white supremacist militias attacked Black Republican supporters in Colfax, Louisiana, killing at least 60 to 150 Black men in what became known as the Colfax Massacre. It was one of the deadliest incidents of Reconstruction violence and demonstrated the failure of local authorities to protect Black citizens.
