The Pauma War began when Luiseño Indigenous people captured and killed 11 Mexican rancheros in retaliation for the murder of their leader by a Mexican sheriff. This conflict marked early Indigenous resistance against colonial and state violence in Southern California following the Mexican-American War. The war escalated into broader Indigenous uprisings across California as tribes fought to protect their lands and sovereignty.
