The 13th Amendment, ratified on December 6, 1865, abolished slavery and involuntary servitude in the United States, except as punishment for a crime. It was the first of the Reconstruction Amendments and legally ended chattel slavery nationwide. This landmark legislation fulfilled a central goal of the abolition movement.
